He knew every one of them by name. He still does.

Old Abel Stroud dug the graves in this yard for fifty years, and dying did not end the job. He leans on the same spade, smock hanging off his bony frame, and holds up a skull to look it in the eye like an old friend he has not seen in a while. He talks to them. Some nights, according to the village, they answer. He is not hostile, just tired, and very particular about who gets buried where.

A Conversation With a Skull: The pose is all about the sightline between his face and the skull, so paint the skull warmer than the ghost (old bone, a little dirt in the eye sockets) and the eye goes straight to the exchange. The spade is a clean, straight shaft running the full height of the figure, the best place on the model for a metal or wood contrast. His face is deeply lined and hollow cheeked, and the smock shreds into long fingers of vapour at the hem.
