From the maker

Somebody always tastes the wine first. Tonight it was Master Corvin.

Corvin Ashby supplied the cellar of a duke with expensive enemies, and part of the job was drinking the first cup. The poison was meant for his master. It found him instead. He is caught in the moment it took hold: mouth open in a strangled cry, fingers at his collar, the other arm flung forward offering the cup as if he could still warn somebody. Wine pours from the goblet, the jugs under his arm tip and spill, and the little cask on his hip has its tap still open.

Every Container Is Spilling: Count them: a goblet, two jugs and a cask, and every one of them is pouring. That gives a painter a run of liquid to pick out in deep red, which is the cheapest way to tie a translucent ghost to a story. The cask face is broad, flat and smooth, perfect space for a painted vintner’s mark. His soft cap and curled hair frame a face sculpted mid scream, so a dark wash in the mouth and eye sockets does most of the work for you.

He also makes a superb tavern haunting: the barrels in the cellar never stay full, and now the party knows why.
