From the maker

In collaboration with Focus Features and Robert Eggers' Werwulf, Blood Milk presents a trio of jewels steeped in the folklore of the Werewolf. Inspired by rituals of shape-shifting, ancient amulets, and devotional objects, each piece harkens back to an era when the night’s darkness and its creatures contained dreaded horrors.

Werwulf is only in theaters Christmas.

The Wulf Moon necklace features a pair of wolf claws formed into the shape of a crescent, cradling a full moon. The shape of the horned moon with tips pointing toward the earth is a historical amuletic design known as lunula or little moon in latin. Dating back thousands of years as a symbol of fertility, the lunula was also worn as a protective amulet to ward off evil. The wearing of wolf remains is a form of sympathetic magic, the belief that like affects like. People would wear and carry the fangs and claws of wolves to be imbued with their strength, cunning and bravery, and also as a form of protection from them.

In the context of the Werewolf, nighttime was when supernatural occurrences abounded in folklore, transformation and shape-shifting included. Whether this was achieved beneath the glow of the full moon or through other strange and wicked means differs throughout the lore. One possible explanation for this belief is due to people's deep rooted fear of the darkness in earlier times. Without the light interference of modern technology, including electricity, our ancestors' experience of the night was far more dangerous than our own. People were shrouded in an unimaginable darkness, especially for those who live in cities today, making them vulnerable to unseeable dangers. This led to a fear of the night and the creatures that dwelled during its hours, both natural and supernatural. This includes the werewolf, a horrific man-beast that has existed for centuries in folklore and within many cultures, attacking both livestock and humans. Likewise, there was also a belief in the full moon’s power to drive both people and animals to ‘lunacy.’ This is most likely due to how observed animal behavior changed during certain lunar phases. Those who acted in a similarly strange way during the full moon were regarded with suspicion, and could be suspected of being werewolves.
