From the maker
When the M-1943 field jacket was originally conceived, it was a part of a modular system, with groundbreaking military research having proven for the first time, categorically, that wearing multiple thin layers was more effective at keeping soldiers warm than one heavy coat. The JACKET, FIELD, PILE, O.D. was one part of this system, designed to allow the M-1943 jacket to be worn in all seasons and climates, thanks to its double-face alpaca lining.
However, at the same time as the M-43 uniform was developed, some high-ranking officers, chiefly Brigadier General Robert M. Littlejohn, campaigned against its widespread adoption over concerns regarding “soldierly appearances”. When it became clear that adoption of the M-43 was inevitable, they shifted to promoting their preferred coat, the M-1944 Eisenhower or “Ike Jacket”, as the liner instead, thus limiting the use of the Jacket, field, pile, o.d. and impacting the M-43 uniform’s efficacy in cold climates.
