From the maker
Black Service Shoes were originally designed as formal footwear for official Navy events and ceremonies, but they quickly became a staple of daily wear among sailors. This model is a faithful reproduction of a 1940s design, notable for its distinctive T-shaped backstay and rare 6-eyelet configuration, an uncommon detail for its time.
The U.S.N. SERVICE SHOES / HORSEHIDE BUTTOCK are crafted from buttock leather, a premium horsehide known for its exceptional gloss and durability, which elevates the classic design. Unlike the originals, which were often made using calfskin and finished with a coating for waterproofing and shine, buttock leather achieves its natural luster without the need for synthetic coatings, offering a more refined finish.
The T-shaped backstay featured here is a defining characteristic of 1940s-50s service shoes and while 5-eyelet configurations were more common during this period, rare 6-eyelet variations like this one anticipated the standard design adopted in the 1960s.
