A petite opium poppy flower blooms on either side of a stunning labradorite marquis gemstone, paired with its bulbous seed pods.

The opium poppy has been utilized as medicine, for pain, anesthesia and sleep since ancient times. Its medicinal properties are still utilized today in some of our most important medicines, namely Morphine. Its beauty, a large paper thin bloom with a bright red color, adds to its lore, as it has been used throughout Greco-Roman mythological art, appearing alongside Demeter after her loss of Persephone as a grief aid. It is sacred to the god of sleep, Hypnos, and Nyx, the goddess of Night for her likewise associations with sleep.

Due to its soporific qualities, it has been linked to the infamous 'witches ointment' and appears in some  historical recipes for it. These ointments have been said to cause "flight", mainly to the Sabbat, were used to curse, kill, and were also used for shape-shifting, love magic, divination, or for assistance in seeing spirits. Most likely the ointments that included opium were originally used for pain relief or for help with sleep, and utilized many of the same plants associated with the "witches garden," such as poppy, with the unexpected yet perhaps welcomed side effect of interesting dreams or altered consciousness.
