Gummy bears were invented in 1922 by Hans Riegel in Bonn, Germany -- the world's first fruit gummy candy, originally called dancing bears (Tanzbaeren). They became a global phenomenon. In pop art, everyday objects rendered at unexpected scale become something else entirely: Jeff Koons made giant balloon animals from stainless steel; others have made candies into museum-quality subjects. The gummy bear diptych takes the most recognisable candy in the world and gives it real wall presence. Printed in gallery-quality UV ink on Grade-A Canadian maple. About this diptych
