From the maker

Wassily Kandinsky painted Upward (Empor) in 1929 while teaching at the Bauhaus in Dessau. By this point Kandinsky had moved into a more geometric, analytical phase -- shapes precisely placed, colours in controlled relationships. He believed colour and form could convey emotion directly, like music, without needing to represent the visible world. The painting is at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York.
