Ilya Repin painted Barge Haulers on the Volga between 1870 and 1873. Eleven men haul a steam barge upstream on the Volga River — bound together by a rope, half-bent under the weight, faces showing exhaustion and resignation. Repin was 26 when he began the painting after seeing haulers on the Neva River in St. Petersburg. The work caused a sensation in Russia for depicting ordinary labourers with the scale and seriousness reserved for historical scenes. Tsar Alexander III purchased it. It is at the Russian Museum in St. Petersburg. About this deck
