This striking gown is a detailed recreation of the striped dress Ellen Hutter wears in one of the most unforgettable scenes of Focus Features’ new adaptation NOSFERATU. As she tends to Thomas, he warns her that Count Orlok is coming to Wisborg, and Ellen confesses the truth: she called out to him long ago, and it was she who brought this darkness upon them. Overcome, she tears herself free of her bodice in a fit of possession. Our version honors that moment with a V-shaped neckline that closes with hooks and eyes at the front. Yes, it was made for bodice ripping.
Printed to evoke a moiré striped taffeta, the fabric is carefully mitered so the stripes match across the front and back bodice. The early Victorian era favored dramatic sleeves, and these balloon with crinoline beneath epaulets at the shoulder before tapering into a longer cuff. The waist dips into a V at the front, echoing the neckline, and a removable white cotton bib trimmed in lace attaches at the neckline for a more demure look.
The full-length skirt is deeply pleated, with a stiff crinoline at the waist and tulle shirring at the hem for a full, buoyant silhouette. The gown is made of a poly/spandex taffeta, lined in poly satin charmeuse, and closes with a center back YKK bridal zipper. And yes, it has pockets. Prim and proper on the surface, ready to come undone.
Designed by Lynh Haaga and Micheline Pitt-Norman and made in China.
