Albrecht Dürer engraved Adam and Eve in 1504 — his attempt to define ideal human proportions using the theories of Vitruvius and Polykleitos. The result is one of the most technically refined prints of the Northern Renaissance. Dürer added symbolic animals around the couple: the cat, the rabbit, the elk, the ox — each representing one of the four temperaments. The original copper engraving is held in collections worldwide.
