Azulejo (from the Arabic az-zulayj, meaning polished stone) is the tradition of painted ceramic tile that developed in Portugal and Spain from the 15th century onward, influenced by North African and Moorish tilework. Portuguese azulejo reached its peak in the 17th-18th centuries with large-scale blue-and-white panels on church and palace walls. Madonna images appeared frequently -- sacred iconography rendered in the same blue-and-white palette as secular scenes.
