The Last Judgment is one of the central themes of Byzantine iconography, depicting the Second Coming, the resurrection of the dead, and the final separation of the saved from the condemned. Orthodox icons of the Last Judgment follow a strict compositional canon developed between the 9th and 14th centuries — heaven and hell, hierarchies of angels, rivers of fire, and the scales of divine justice.
