From the maker

Fourteen and a half ounces is a denim weight, not a shirt weight — and that is the point of the UES Heavy Flannel. The cloth is woven on vintage shuttle looms in Okayama from thick warp and weft yarns, which gives the face its rugged, textured hand and the check its depth: bold blocks of wine, orange and grey crossed by fine white and green lines, in colors that are yarn-dyed by reactive dyeing so they sit inside the fiber and age into a patina rather than washing out. The inside is softly brushed, so for all the weight on the outside, the shirt is warm and quiet against the skin.

Everything is done in Japan, from spinning and dyeing the yarn to weaving, cutting and sewing. The seams are rolled and double chain-stitched for the long haul, the chest pockets are cut in UES’s acorn shape with buttoned flaps, and the buttons are natural ivory palm nut. The fabric moves and drapes better than its weight suggests, which is what keeps it wearable rather than merely impressive. 100% cotton. Made in Japan.

Fit Notes: This shirt fits true to size — note that previous UES Heavy Flannels ran considerably smaller, and the pattern has been updated. Compared to most global American brands, we recommend sizing up one from your usual size: a size 3 (L) fits similarly to an American L. As always, we strongly recommend checking our size chart and comparing it with your best-fitting shirt to ensure the right fit.
