Sirena Pigmentada Clay Wall Decor handmade in Metepec, Estado de México

This charming sirena (mermaid) wall sculpture was handmade in Metepec, Estado de México, using traditional barro pigmentado techniques. Each element, from the mermaid’s flowing hair to her colorful tail of blooming flowers, is hand-sculpted in natural clay, then carefully attached using thin wires to create a raised, three-dimensional composition that feels both rustic and alive.

Unlike painted ceramics, this piece is decorated with mineral oxide pigments brushed by hand onto the clay while it is still porous. Afterward, it is fired in a kiln, sealing the color into the ceramic itself. This process, known locally as barro pigmentado, results in deep, durable colors that won’t chip or fade like surface paint. The final sculpture is full of motion and meaning, blending storytelling, natural elements, and symbolism with the craftsmanship of a region known for its centuries-old clay traditions.
