Leonardo da Vinci painted the Mona Lisa between approximately 1503 and 1519. The sitter is believed to be Lisa Gherardini, wife of the Florentine merchant Francesco del Giocondo — hence the Italian title La Gioconda. Leonardo used a technique he called sfumato: fine layers of translucent glaze applied over months to create soft transitions between light and shadow. The smile has no hard edge — it disappears when you look directly at it and reappears in peripheral vision. Napoleon kept the painting in his bedroom before it entered the Louvre, where it has been since 1797. About this deck
