The Crucifixion is the most painted subject in the history of Western art — from Giotto's cross at Santa Croce to Grünewald's Isenheim Altarpiece to Francis Bacon's distorted triptychs. This version draws on the icon tradition: deep cathedral blue, Mary and John at the foot of the cross, a skull in the earth beneath — Golgotha, the place of the skull. Flat colour, bold linework, the gravity of a medieval altarpiece compressed into the vertical format of a skateboard deck. About this deck
