A hand with an eye in the palm -- the hamsa or Hand of Fatima is one of the oldest protective symbols in the Middle East and North Africa, appearing in Jewish, Islamic, and Christian traditions alike. The eye within the hand is the Nazar (evil eye amulet) -- a symbol of protection against envy found from Turkey to Morocco to India. In contemporary art and street culture, the all-seeing eye in the hand appears on everything from street murals to tattoos to album art. Two decks side by side make the composition breathe.
