THE OMINOUS OBSERVATORY

A brass dome gaped open to a vast, indifferent sky where something older than the stars had stirred, its attention drawn at last to the tiny, inquisitive creatures below. Astronomical charts curl with damp, ink gone the color of old rust, and the oculus stares fixed at a constellation that was never there before: cold brass, ozone, black amber, and vellum dust.
