The tiger has been the dominant apex predator of South Asian jungles for thousands of years and the dominant subject of that region's art and mythology for just as long. In Indian art, the tiger is the vehicle of the goddess Durga. In Japanese and Chinese art, tigers represent power, courage, and protection against evil. In the Western tradition, painters from Delacroix to Rousseau placed the tiger in jungle settings that balanced beauty and danger. There are fewer than 3,900 wild tigers left on Earth.
