Gustav Klimt designed The Tree of Life between 1905 and 1909 as part of the Stoclet Frieze -- a large-scale mosaic commission for the dining room of the Palais Stoclet in Brussels, one of the most important Art Nouveau buildings in the world. Klimt worked in enamel, gold, and precious stones. The tree -- with its spiralling branches, golden leaves, and single black bird -- became the most recognisable image from the frieze and one of the defining symbols of Art Nouveau. The preparatory cartoons are at the MAK (Museum of Applied Arts) in Vienna. About this triptych
