From the maker

A luxury studio pottery cup handcrafted for those who appreciate artisan stoneware.

Some ceramics are carefully planned; others are a direct negotiation with the fires of the kiln. The Gold Defiance Ceramic Mug is a rare survivor of the latter.

To achieve the heavily layered, glossy amber and sage finish, multiple coats of highly fluid glaze were applied to its walls. In the intense heat of the firing, these materials liquefied completely, running down the body of the mug in dramatic, physical streams.

This technique carries immense risk. Had the kiln burned for even a minute longer, these heavy drips would have cascaded past the base and fused the piece permanently to the shelf—instantly destroying it. The firing was halted at the exact second of maximum tension.

What remains is an object that captures the thrilling volatility of studio craft. Weighty, highly reflective, and completely one-of-a-kind, it stands as a beautiful testament to defying the flames.
