This hand-embroidered table runner was made by Otomí artisans in Hidalgo using the iconic Tenango embroidery style. The design features animals, flowers, and plants stitched in vibrant thread against a black background. Each figure is drawn by hand and filled in with satin-like stitches that bring the fabric to life.

Embroidering on black fabric is more difficult than working on lighter colors. The dark background makes it harder to see the fine details, and it strains the artisan’s eyesight over time. That’s why these pieces take longer to make and are less common to find. Every runner is one-of-a-kind and reflects hours of slow, careful work done entirely by hand.
