In 1956, two psychologists named Donald Horton and Richard Wohl published a paper describing what they called parasocial interaction. What they found wasn't that audiences confuse television with life. It's that there is no separate faculty for people who can't see you back. The same part of the brain that evaluates a neighbor evaluates a man on a screen in another state, and it does not report which one it is looking at. Attachment forms. Expectation follows. Horton and Wohl noted that the audience is free to withdraw at any time, but mostly doesn't.
