BASIL PREYLEAN?

TOP: BASIL - A bright, aromatic burst of fresh basil opens the fragrance with an unexpected green snap, immediately letting you know this is not your usual holiday gourmand.

MIDDLE: PRALINE - As the basil settles in, warm praline takes over with a roasted, caramelized nuttiness that brings the sweetness forward without losing that strange herbal edge.

BASE: VANILLA, MARSHMALLOW - Vanilla and marshmallow melt together underneath it all, creating a soft, creamy sweetness that lingers on the skin and gives Basil Preylean its unmistakable holiday warmth.

Green at first, deliciously gourmand underneath, and just peculiar enough to make you wonder what exactly has been rooting around in your stocking.

Those of you who joined us for last year’s holiday advent calendar may already be acquainted with Mr. Basil Preylean, although “acquainted” is perhaps generous considering most encounters with a Preylean involve waking up on Christmas morning and wondering who ate half the contents of your stocking.

According to the PhoeniX-Files, Preyleans are small, soot-covered creatures that have lived around fireplaces and chimneys for generations. They possess a remarkable tolerance for smoke and heat, prefer to remain hidden from humans, and have developed an almost unreasonable appetite for praline, vanilla sugar, marshmallow, and other holiday treats left within climbing distance of a hearth.

Basil was always a little different.

While most Preyleans disappear the moment they hear footsteps, Basil has never shown much interest in secrecy. He prefers to perch beside the fireplace, basil-leaf hair slightly singed at the ends, and politely introduce himself while helping himself to whatever you foolishly left unattended. He is chatty, surprisingly personable, and completely incapable of understanding why you might object to a stranger eating the contents of your Christmas stocking.

That peculiar little creature inspired one of the surprises in last year’s holiday advent calendar, a fragrance built around Basil, Praline, Vanilla, and Marshmallow. The combination sounded odd enough on paper that we were not entirely certain what people would make of it.

Then you smelled it.

Basil Preylean made quite a splash (pun intended), and the requests for a proper release began almost immediately.

Apparently quite a few Shave Cadets decided that aromatic basil mingling with toasted praline, creamy vanilla, and fluffy marshmallow was exactly the sort of strange holiday fragrance they had been missing.

We assumed Basil himself had simply gone back up the chimney after Christmas and returned to whatever Preyleans do during the off-season.

Unfortunately, we failed to account for his curiosity.

Somewhere between last Christmas and the present day, Mr. Basil Preylean went poking around in the wrong stocking.

Precisely whose stocking it was remains unclear. We have also been unable to determine why someone would keep radioactive material in Christmas hosiery, although this is the PAA Universe and experience has taught us that certain questions are best left unanswered.

What we do know is that Basil encountered some sort of radioactive...um...stuff.

After that, reports become increasingly unreliable. The first witnesses claimed to have seen an unusually large green figure moving between houses & shrubs late at night. A few days later, somebody reported something covered in moss and basil leaves peering over the roof of a three-story building.

By the following week, authorities were receiving reports of a gigantic creature wandering through the outskirts of the city with glowing eyes and claws roughly the size of automobiles.

It was Basil. Sigh...He had mutated, slightly.

By “slightly,” we mean that a creature once small enough to climb into your stocking was now large enough to use an office building as a scratching post.

Naturally, he did what any respectable giant monster would do under the circumstances.

He headed downtown.

What followed has since become known around the Phoenix Shaving offices as the Preylean Incident.

Traffic stopped as Basil lumbered between buildings looking for anything remotely edible. Rooftop HVAC units were investigated and immediately rejected. A bakery delivery truck disappeared under suspicious circumstances. Several storefront awnings were damaged when Basil discovered that the aroma of vanilla could travel surprisingly far through a city canyon.

The situation escalated considerably when he located a confectionery. To Basil, this must have appeared less like a shop and more like destiny. (can ya blame him?)

Witnesses reported the enormous chap crouched between buildings, happily devouring pralines while emergency vehicles gathered several blocks away. Marshmallows followed. Anything containing vanilla did not last much longer.

For several minutes, civilization and cryptid appeared to reach an uneasy understanding. Then somebody tried to take the candy away.

That was a mistake.

Buildings shook, windows rattled, and Basil announced his displeasure loudly enough to set off car alarms several neighborhoods away. The once-chatty chimney imp had officially entered his giant-monster phase.

And yet, somewhere beneath several tons of radioactive moss, claws, and basil leaves, he was still Basil.

He still wanted sweets.

He still seemed inclined to introduce himself. He simply had to lean down about twenty stories to do it.

Which brings us to this year’s holiday release. (can you say Epic Lead In?)

The fragrance that inspired all of this remains wonderfully unchanged. Basil Preylean still combines the aromatic green freshness of Basil with the toasted, caramelized richness of Praline, while Vanilla and Marshmallow bring the soft gourmand warmth that made the original advent-calendar appearance such a surprise.

Basil keeps the sweeter elements from becoming predictable, giving the fragrance a fresh herbal streak that cuts through the gourmand heart. Praline supplies that roasted confectionary warmth, Vanilla smooths the composition, and Marshmallow gives everything a soft sweetness that feels perfectly at home during the holidays.

Basil Preylean is finally receiving a proper 2026 holiday release of his own.

The creature you asked us to bring back has returned!
