I asked Penelope if she’d been watching any of the Summer Olympics. She looked at me blankly and said she hadn’t seen it and hadn’t even heard of it. When I asked why, she answered in the same flat voice she always speaks in. “I hate all sports. I hate the people who play sports. If I had my way I’d pay an army of goth teenagers to end the whole thing; kill every professional athlete and everyone who runs the leagues. Spare the children. That’s it.” She didn’t smile or raise her eyebrows. She just said it. I told her I’d been watching diving, both the men’s and women’s events. I used to dive in high school for a couple of years. I had to quit when my dad got sick. Work and stuff got in the way.
